  • JavaOne 2008 - Movie Night
Sun, 04 May 2008 02:13:57 GMT, OTN TechBlog
Yeah, I'll be at CommunityOne/RedmonkOne on Monday and JavaOne Tuesday/Wednesday. Much of the time I'll be at Oracle's booth (#524 - BEA right next door), so do stop by to say "ola".

OTN is sponsoring a movie night, as is traditional, on Wednesday (Iron Man - what else - @ The Metreon); the first 500 people to complete a pretty brief survey will get a ticket. We'll be raffling 5 posters while we're there, too.

    Hope to see you there.

Update (May 8): A good time was had by all; thanks for coming!

  • Suggest/Vote On Oracle OpenWorld 2008 Sessions
Fri, 02 May 2008 17:32:53 GMT, OTN TechBlog
A new milestone on the ongoing journey to make Oracle OpenWorld 2008 (tag openworld08) more community-oriented is now in the rear-view mirror: 35 slots have been reserved for user-suggested sessions, and you can pitch your own and vote on others at Oracle Mix:

The top vote-getters will be added to the agenda. (Of course, if you don't make the cut, you can always present at the Oracle OpenWorld Unconference.)

You can read more about this feature, as well as how to get your "I'm attending Oracle OpenWorld" profile badge, in this post by AppsLab Jake. And, oh yeah, registration is open!

Update: Just learned that a FAQ [wiki.oracle.com] is available about this process.

  • Jim Gray Tribute
Thu, 01 May 2008 19:57:05 GMT, OTN TechBlog
Mike Olson tells me that a formal Jim Gray Tribute is planned for May 31, in Zellerbach Hall on the UC Berkeley Campus.

If you know anything about database technology (or enterprise computing really), you know that Jim Gray, a Turing Award laureate, was a giant in his field. I never knew him personally, but everyone I know who did also calls him a gracious human being.

It's appropriate that the tribute program includes a technical session - speakers include Mike Stonebraker, Gordon Bell, and Bruce Lindsay, among others.

  • Sunrise: The BEA and Oracle Developer Communities Come Together
Wed, 30 Apr 2008 22:50:25 GMT, OTN TechBlog
I've always had great respect for BEA's developer and architect communities (dev2dev and arch2arch, respectively). For that reason, the closure of the BEA acquisition is really good news not only for OTN, but also for members of those communities.

WebLogic and Tuxedo users in particular are fairly fanatical, and their passion and community-first orientation will make the wider Oracle community that much richer. (It almost goes without saying that there is surely significant overlap here, actually.) Welcome, you guys (and gals)!.

We are already beginning to engage with the BEA teams behind those communities to ensure as smooth an integration as possible. We don't have all the details yet, but rest assured that as we progressively flesh out the roadmap we will communicate the details as we have them.

Remember, dev2dev/arch2arch and OTN are actually quite similar, whether in terms of philosophy/macro-approach, events, Website information architecture, or community tools. So I'm confident that "disruption" will be minimal (although some is unavoidable). And yeah, we'll be looking for some ex-BEA ACEs!

I have created a new group on Oracle Mix specifically for the purpose of answering questions, getting feedback, etc. about this process; I encourage all BEA users to join. Furthermore, we hope to communicate directly via dev2dev and arch2arch channels fairly shortly.

For now, if anyone has any questions here, I'm happy to answer them!

Update (May 7) - thanks to dev2dev EIC Kevin Farnham for his post on this subject!

  • Better Late Than Never: Database Client/Instant Client for Apple Mac OS X on Intel
Thu, 24 Apr 2008 00:11:10 GMT, OTN TechBlog
Was there ever a better time to announce this?

The 10.2.0.4 Database Client (+ Instant Client) for Apple Mac OS X on Intel x86 is now available for download on OTN.

Now, move along, nothing else to see here.

  • Web 2.0 Expo Unconf
Wed, 23 Apr 2008 23:12:33 GMT, OTN TechBlog
I am really happy to see that the booth-based unconference is going well. Geoff Lee, product manager for Oracle XML DB, had it tough as the first presenter, but he "kicked the door in" (as he put it).  Subsequent sessions were better attended.

Peter Moskovits (Oracle) on Ajax mashups:

Stewart Mader of Atlassian (and author of Wikipatterns), on wiki-fying your enterprise:

And Charles Armstrong of Trampoline Systems, an up-and-coming purveyor of "intelligent" social networking:

Unfortunately I will experience the conf only vicariously tomorrow due to some needed dental work, but back in the saddle on Friday.
